When the market you serve is comprised of busy, focused, tech-savvy marketing and public relations professionals, you have to be really creative to make them stop and notice you. And what better way to get their attention than to send a message inside a barrel of monkeys?!
“It was such an out-of-the-box idea,” said Tabbi Burwell, president of the Oklahoma City chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. “This is something you don’t typically get in the mail. Recipients had to stop and open it now to see what it was all about!”
What it was all about was the PRSA’s Professional Development half-day seminar… at the Oklahoma City Zoo! “Our committee did a great job of helping our members relive their childhood a little bit while improving their professional skills at the same time,” said Tabbi. “It was really a fantastic event.”
Titled “Navigating the PR Jungle”, the PRSA carried the jungle theme from the invitations to the website and social media contests. The event began with lunch at the zoo’s Canopy Restaurant, followed by presentations in the Rosser Education Center from three highly regarded professionals in the world of public relations. The day concluded with a Safari Voyage across Zoo Lake and a Hakuna Matata Happy Hour.
“We are always looking for ways to add value for our members,” Tabbi said. “The chapter has not had a professional development seminar in a couple of years, so it was a priority for us to do it this year. The board of directors was prepared to lose money on the event because we wanted to invest in our members. As it turned out, we actually made a little money instead!”
Attendance at the event was higher than expected. Both members and non-members were struck by the consistent (and creative!) branding of the event, the top-notch presentations and the opportunity to experience something new and interesting. Our friends at MarketingProfs recently wrote a great piece about how to “Shake Up Your Next Event”. This event hit the mark!
It’s a jungle out there. ROBYN loves working with smart brands that don’t want to monkey around!
